URGENT - SB 458 to be heard tomorrow afternoon

  • 02/21/2012 5:43 PM
    Message # 831789

    Dear Colleagues:

Just when we thought we could take a short breather after the temporary suspension of HB 59, a new bill, SB 458, has been introduced in the Senate.

SB 458 is a bill is that primarily intends to correct some of the imprecise language from last year's HB 87 about the use and acceptance of "secure and verifiable documents."  We expected this correction to be proposed this year, BUT the bill also slips in a college ban provision like HB 59: the bill adds "post secondary education" to the official list of public benefits for which the undocumented are denied access.

Our message on SB 458 should be focused on asking committee members to REMOVE the "post secondary" language. Tell them that the BOR has already taken care of this issue and that the Chancellor has taken the position that this prohibition is not necessary. Use any of the talking points previously used for HB 59.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will meet to discuss SB 458 tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at 4 pm; the hearing will be in Rm. 450 of the Capitol.

Below, please find a list of  Senate Judiciary Committee members to focus on between now and tomorrow afternoon to ask them to oppose the language which bans higher education. The hearing is TOMORROW, but we have tonight and tomorrow morning to send emails, make phone calls, and send faxes. Please note the "FOCUS" below each member's contact information to use the best talking points.

Please let know if you have any questions, and THANK YOU for acting quickly!
